Maria

So I was on my way home yesterday and was thinking about how I never replied to an email from my good friend Maria that she sent wishing me a happy birthday. I even thought that a get together at Milestones would be a good chance to use the free crab dip coupon that we all received the last time we got together. Then lo and behold, I gazed outside the subway at Bay Station from my seat and there she was! I quickly scooted outside and got on the adjacent subway car and told her my tale, including the part about the crab dip coupon which she also mentioned, to which she laughed as she always does at my silliness.

Cloverfield

So I checked out Cloverfield on the weekend and I have to admit that I kind of liked it. I can easily see how some people didn’t like it thought as it’s not your typical movie. It ended up being exactly what I expected it to be so it was $8 well spent. Cloverfield is the kind of movie that generates buzz which is clear from all the information that keeps coming out. Did you know that HUD’s height was changed on his MySpace page the day of the movie’s release? Or that “Cloverfield” was the codename of the military operation dispatched to battle the monster? The information is out there. A good place to start is IMDb’s FAQ page for Cloverfield.

New Moon

So I was reading the book New Moon that Ramona lent to me. It’s a continuation of the book Twilight she lent me a little while ago. As I was heading home yesterday, I noticed a woman holding a book with the exact same cover. Anyway, I didn’t stare at her outright since well… that’s rude. I did nonchalantly make sure I boarded via the same door she did on to the subway car. I sat across from her and to my dismay, she was not a woman but in fact a little girl… probably around 14 years old.

Admittedly, the book is ok. It was actually really starting to get good today. It will probably be even better tomorrow.

Nightmarehost

So someone at Dreamhost caused a ruckus when they accidentally caused their billing cleanup program to run as if it were December 31st, 2008. This of course is a problem since that particular date is over a year away. According to this particular blog post on the billing problem, they ended up taking in about 7.5 million dollars due to this error. Not only that but it’s possible if the script determined that you were long over due on your payment it might have shut down your site. Luckily for me, my site is still here and the credit card they have on file for me isn’t valid on that particular date so I wasn’t billed at all. I’d hate to be a person that pays with debit or something and have insufficient funds. I *would* have been billed over $400, a completely wrong figure mind you, and for some people that’s a lot of money. The nice folks at Dreamhost have promised to compensate anyone who’s bank charged them overdraft charges though but it’s still a hassle to have to deal with.

I’ve written similar scripts, so I know from experience that you really have to check, double check and triple check scripts that deal with money because when people get erroneously billed they freak out and send angry emails.

The blog also notes that the billing script no longer accepts dates in the future :) .
